Understanding Bland Altman analysis

چکیده
In a contemporary clinical laboratory it is very common to have to assess the agreement between two quantitative methods of measurement. The correct statistical approach to assess this degree of agreement is not obvious. Correlation and regression studies are frequently proposed. However, correlation studies the relationship between one variable and another, not the differences, and it is not recommended as a method for assessing the comparability between methods. In 1983 Altman and Bland (B&A) proposed an alternative analysis, based on the quantification of the agreement between two quantitative measurements by studying the mean difference and constructing limits of agreement. The B&A plot analysis is a simple way to evaluate a bias between the mean differences, and to estimate an agreement interval, within which 95% of the differences of the second method, compared to the first one, fall. Data can be analyzed both as unit differences plot and as percentage differences plot. The B&A plot method only defines the intervals of agreements, it does not say whether those limits are acceptable or not. Acceptable limits must be defined a priori, based on clinical necessity, biological considerations or other goals. The aim of this article is to provide guidance on the use and interpretation of Bland Altman analysis in method comparison studies.

Embedding equivalence t-test results in Bland Altman Plots visualising rater reliability
ABSTRACT In determining rater (instrument) reliability many techniques are available. A main discrimination between methods is made by the level of measurement (binary, categorical, continuous). Most techniques, such as the Mean Absolute Difference (MAD) or the Intraclass Correlation Analysis (ICC), apply to continuous data. Two other analysis methods are equivalence t-tests (quantitatively det...
متن کاملApplication of Bland-Altman Method in Comparing Transrectal and Transabdominal Ultrasonography for Estimating Prostate Volume
Background: Estimating prostate volume using less invasive transabdominal ultrasonography (TAUS) instead of transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS) is of interest in terms of identifying their agreement level. Previous reports on this subject, applied general correlation coefficient as the level of agreement. This study uses Bland-Altman method to quantify TAUS and TRUS agreement on estimating prost...
متن کاملTesting the agreement of medical instruments: overestimation of bias in the Bland-Altman analysis.
OBJECTIVES The Bland-Altman method is the most popular method used to assess the agreement of medical instruments. The main concern about this method is the presence of proportional bias. The slope of the regression line fitted to the Bland-Altman plot should be tested to exclude proportional bias. The aim of this study was to determine whether the overestimation of bias in the Bland-Altman ana...
متن کاملRevisiting reliability of quantified perineal ultrasound: Bland and Altman analysis of a new protocol for the rectangular coordinate method.
AIMS This study tested the reliability of a new protocol for the rectangular coordinate method of quantifying perineal ultrasound. METHODS Representative scans of healthy primiparous females were quantified by positioning a pubic bone template, drawn onto an acetate sheet containing x-y axes, over scans, by aligning the x-axis with the pubic bone central axis. Values for x (D(x)) and y (D(y))...
متن کاملSemi-quantitative segmental perfusion scoring in myocardial perfusion SPECT: visual vs. automated analysis
Introduction: It is recommended that the physician apply at least a semi-quantitative segmental scoring system in myocardial perfusion SPECT. We aimed to assess the agreement between automated semi-quantitative analysis using QPS (quantitative Perfusion SPECT) software and visual approach for calculation of summed stress score (SSS), summed rest score (SRS) and summed difference score (SDS). ...
